Shadows Chapter 3

I’d barely blinked before Mills was at my side. He crushed me to his chest and hissed.
<Do not move, do not breathe, do not even blink until I say so> He pathed to me. I went to nod, but caught myself, freezing in reply.
<What’s going on Mills?>
<You were right, something was wrong, I didn’t know until a few minutes ago though> He sounded appalled at himself.
<Why what is it?>
<Something’s broken through the barrier> I felt sudden panic rise up inside me. The barrier is a fence like thing that surrounds the town; it keeps away every possible threat. It was created upon my birth by the most powerful demon scribes in the void. They formed it using ancient magic, it had never been breached before, and that was the way it was supposed to be. The fact that it had been breached and no-one had been informed was seriously bad. There was going to be hell in the void.
<Mills…>
<Hush, there are many of them, they descended about an hour ago…why did it take me so long to notice…> He mused with himself, outraged.
<What are…‘they’, exactly?>
<Night Crawlers> I had never heard of them before but the name sent shivers down my spine and I felt Mills hold around my waist tighten.
<Do not move> He reminded me <The house is masked but if they can get through the barrier without us knowing we have to suspect that they will be able to see through the masking spell>
<What are you going to do?>
<We’ll phase out once I’m sure they’ve passed over…or once they attack> we stood still for what seemed like ages before a question began to nag at me.
<Mills, what exactly do night crawlers do?> I wasn’t sure I wanted to know but I had to ask. I felt Mills suppress a grimace as he struggled to play it down.
<They’re attracted to children, because children have strong imagination’s, their dreams are more creative then adults. Night crawlers do exactly as their name tells, they crawl into your dreams and turn them into nightmares>
<That’s not that bad…>
<Addy, these demons scar you; it’s the worst form of torture possible. When a victim wakes they remember nothing, but after that different things trigger reactions. The victims start to remember the dream and to them they’re back in the dream, to them it becomes a reality. They fight the things inside them that aren’t even there. They tear at their own flesh trying to get the demons out and end up killing themselves. Then the Night Crawlers move onto another victim and so on> I felt bile rise up in my throat.
<Can we do anything?>
<Not now, but maybe the scribes can think of something>
<How long will they have?>
<A few days, a week if they’re lucky> a cold force suddenly swept across the room and our thought speech ceased. I heard Mills mutter something and he covered my eyes with his hands.
<Wha…> I heard some sort of shrieking and pounding against Mills defense orb.
<They’ve found you, we’re phasing out now> I felt my body meld into his as we became shadows. It was the easiest way to travel to the void, or rather the least painful, or the safest. I couldn’t say it was pleasant, but it wasn’t unpleasant, just uneventful. You couldn’t feel your body mass anymore, you felt weightless and like you were sliding through water with you eyes closed. A rush of hot air blew against me and I felt my body become my own again. I opened my eyes and nudged Mills.
“We need to do something” I cried, clutching his hands. Mills jaw was set, but though his eyes were still a startling blood red they seemed to soften.
“I’ll see what I can do; you are my main priority at the moment though”
“Mills!” Called a panicked voice “Where is she?” Mills stepped away, untangling me from his tight hold.
“Addison!” A worried Jahosa cried, sweeping me up in his strong arms.  Jahosa was an old demon scribe who had taught me when I was young.
“Are you ok? I was in such a frazzle when I heard the barrier had failed and even more so when you didn’t turn up immediately!”
“Wait you knew it had been broken through?” Mills demanded. Jahosa shot Mills a confused look.
“Of course”
“I didn’t, I wasn’t informed at all. I got no reading; I couldn’t sense a thing until I started to hear their cries”
“Oh dear…”
“Why wasn’t I contacted?”
“Oh but you were Mills, as soon as you didn’t turn up we sent through several messages”
“I got nothing” Jahosa bit his cracked lip and twirled some of his black beard around his finger. Jahosa was old for a demon, almost 3000 years old, but his human appearance was merely 40 or so.
“We have a problem then don’t we” The voice came from neither Mills nor Jahosa.
“Netol” Mills bowed respectfully, Jahosa just nodded in acknowledgement. I twisted out of Jahosa’s hold to get a glimpse of the wealthy and important demon. Netol was in his human appearance also, leaving Mills as the only one in his true form. Netol was about 1500 years old. In his human appearance he was a handsome man of his early 30’s. Golden curls encased his face, and large amber eyes bore into the surroundings, not missing a single detail. He looked like the angel Gabriel himself, though Gabriel was much more beautiful and was a much better harp player.
“Lady Addison, I hope you find yourself well?” He asked, kneeling before and taking my hand. I could see Mills watching intently as Netol kissed my hand.
“As well as possible, but I’m worried about the people back home, there has to be something we can do!” Netol stood up and seemed to be thinking.
“I’m not sure, Night Crawlers are not easily repelled” He confessed.
“But my family! My friends!”
“Hush princess, I said they are not easily repelled, not that they cannot be” I bit my lip and tried not to retort.
“Mills and I will discuss what will become of the town, you must rest, Jahosa take the princess to her room and see she is fed and seen to” Jahosa nodded again.
“Perhaps I should see to Addy, Jahosa is much wiser when it comes to these things Netol” Mills spoke up. Netol’s brow furrowed.
“You have a very good point there young Mills, but I need you as well…”
“Perhaps…Haylene?” Netol’s eyes grew wide and he grinned.
“Brilliant, Jahosa fetch her and meet us in the hall of Wardens, we shall wait” Jahosa nodded and began tugging me away with him.
“We shall meet again tomorrow Lady Addison” Netol bowed before turning. I shot Mills a worried look before he disappeared; he returned it with a reassuring grin. It was then that I saw his eyes were now a soft orange, almost his normal gold.

“Addison, this is Haylene, Netols latest fascination” Jahosa chuckled. Haylene laughed with him. Haylene was pretty for a demon. Haylene was an special type of demon, she was a shape shifter, other then her usual human for, she could change into any other living creature. She was a soft lime green in her true form. Her skin was soft like humans, not leathery, though she had thorns growing from different places on her arms and legs. She had a cat like face, with large eyes and high cheekbones. Her nose was long and black and her ears lay against her head like small leaves. She was about 2 meters tall which was a lot taller then me.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mistress” She sang, her voice smooth and sultry. I smiled at her.
“Like wise”
“I need to go but I’ll join you later Addison” Jahosa kissed my fore head and left me with Haylene in the hall.
“Ok, first things first, lets get you bathed and into some new clothes”
“I want to know what’s going on back home”
“There’s nothing you can do at the moment Mistress, let Netol sort it out, he’ll let you know if there’s anything you can do”
“I feel so helpless, and I don’t want to” Haylene put a spiked arm softly over my shoulders.
“No-one does mistress, but sometimes it’s all we can do”

I lay in the marble spa, relaxing while Haylene and a lesser demon washed my boy short black hair.
“How is the mistress feeling? Relaxed?” The lesser demon queried
“Not quite?”
“Happy? Mellow? Tired?” She asked, her thin brows furrowing.
“More like stressed, upset, worried, and useless” Haylene chuckled, but it sounded strained. She was getting tired of my constant worrying. I struggled out of their hold and peered up at them.
“I’m sorry, its just I can’t help thinking about all those kids out there…”
“Netol will contact you as soon as he finds out what to do” I nodded and lay back down in the shallow water as the two female demons hands went back to massaging my scalp.

Not long later I was dressed in a willowy blue dress made of thin almost see through cotton. I stood at the balcony attached to my room, leaning on the golden marble pillars. You hear a lot about princess and the like saying they’re sick of being pampered and others say they never get sick of it. To me it was just something normal. I didn’t often come to the void; I live as normal life as possible on Earth, as was my mothers will so I’m told. When I did venture to the void it was normally only when Mills was called on duty to report, there’d never been such a dramatic happening like this before. I was dwelling on this when the doors of my room burst open. Jahosa swooped in, his large demon figure immediately overshadowing me. He seemed in a rage, which was unusual for him.
“You need to listen to me Addison” He said gruffly, I nodded.
“They won’t let you go back to help”
“Who won’t?”
“Mills and Netol, Mills is going in with Banta and his cronies to sort out the crawlers”
“But…”
“Do you want to help?” Jahosa looked at me seriously.
“Of course! But how?”
“Come here and I’ll tell you” Jahosa looked around nervously and whispered something in my ear, he stepped back just as Mills walked in. He eyed us suspiciously.
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing, Jahosa was just leaving” Jahosa nodded respectfully and backed out.
“Come on Addy, what was that about”
”Jahosa was just warning me that you wouldn’t let me go back” Mills frowned.
“There’s nothing you can do Addy, you’re only half demon, you’re just not strong enough yet”
“Yet! I have so much potential”
“I don’t want you getting hurt, you’re staying here while I sort this out” I huffed and flung myself onto my bed.
“It’s not fair, they’re my family and friends I want to help”
“Getting yourself slaughtered will not help you” As I looked up at Mills I could feel my lip quivering.
“Don’t even think about it, you’re staying here until I come back for you” And then he was gone. I rushed to the wardrobe and pulled out a cloak and hurried down the hall to meet Jahosa. We met and exchanged a few hurried words before we followed Mills back to earth.
I wish it could be longer but I'm on an uploading rampage so I gotta move on fast. Enjoy even if it is rushed ^^
